U-BOAT WARFARE

SHIPPING LOSSES LOW FIGURES FOR JANUARY (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 9. A joint statement regarding U-boat warfare in January, issued under the authority of President Roosevelt and Mr Churchill, says: “ The year opened with a very satisfactory first month for the Allies. More U-boats were destroyed than in December in spite of limited opportunities to attack owing to the extreme caution now exercised by them. This was accomplished by the unremitting offensive action taken by our surface and air forces.

“The amount of merchant ship tonnage sunk by U-boats in January is amongst the lowest monthly figures for the whole war.”
