WAR-TIME PRICE INDEX
NEGLIGIBLE INCREASE LAST YEAR (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 10. “ The level of the war-time price index at-December 15, 1943, was 1001, being 0.1 per cent, higher than the base level. ’’ said the Minister in Charge of Stabilisation, Mr D. G. Sullivan, commenting today on the gazetted announcement by the Government Statistician of the wartime price index. The slight rise in the index figure, the Minister said, was contributed to by two items—meat (including fish) and rents. The change in the rent figure resulted from the August, 1943 (semi-annual) collection of rent data. There was a slight decline In the fresh fruit figure, caused mainly by the lower prices for lemons. Other groups, including fresh vegetables, showed no appreciable variation 'from the base level.
It was realised. Mr Sullivan added, that some items, including clothing of essential , kinds, included in the index, were still difficult to obtain. It was expected, however, that the clothing supply position would progressively improve now that more of' our clothing manufacturing capacity was being devoted to civilian needs under the plan giving priority to certain types of essential clothing.
