TEACHING IN DOMINION (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 9. The chairman of the board of governors of Christchurch Technical College, Mr T. W. West, was asked at a meeting of the board whether, in view of the recent pronouncement by the Senate of the University of New Zealand, there was any likelihood of Russian being taught at the college. “We certainly ought to be in the forefront if Russian is going to be an optional language, as stated,” Mr West replied. “I do not know whether we have an instructor, but I certainly think we should try to get one.” The principal, Dr D. E. Hansen: Have you any knowledge of that language? “No,” replied the chairman; “but I know a great deal more about Russia than I did a few years ago, and so do many other people.” Dr Hansen: The late Dr Harold Williams, who spoke 50 languages, once stated that Russian was the most difficult of all. The Chairman: He was certainly an authority.
