AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Automobile Association was held last night, and was attended by Messrs H. G. Reid (in the chair). G W. Ferens, W. J. Mclnnes, G. T. Thorn J. L. Passmore. J. G. Souness, G. T. Anderson, R. A. Douglas, J. Robertson, W. A. Jenkins. L. M. Wright, T. L. Campbell, P. W. Breen, and W. L. Coxhead. South Island Union The South Island Motor Union advised that the half-yearly meeting of the union would be held in Christchurch on Friday, March 24. Any arrangements would be subject to travelling facilities being available.—Received. Kawarau Dam Bridge The Southland Automomile Association advised that attention' had been drawn to the big holes in the decking of the Kawarau dam bridge. The committee considered that the bridge required urgent attention.—lt was decided to reply that the bridge had been Inspected by the Otago Association’s service officers, and thev could not find anything necessitating action in the meantime. Warrant of Fitness The South Island Motor Union advised that It had received a copy of the Warrant of Fitness Emergency Order, 1943, from the Transport Department. According to the order the term of, warrants of fitness was extended to 12 months In the case of private cars which S were used over less than 2000 miles of public highway during the first six months following the date of the issue of the warrant. This extension of the term did not apply to business cars for the purpose of third party Insurance.. The order also applied to those warrants of fitness which had expired before the date of the issue of the order. A warrant issued on April 1, 1943, would expire on March 31 next.— Received. Glenorchy-Queenstown Road A letter was received from Mr J. H. Forbes, Glenorchy. stating that a committee, of which he was the secretary, had been formed to advance the carrying out of the construction of a road between Glenorchy and Queenstown. The writer said that representations had been made to the Government without success, and it had been decided again to send a petition to the responsible Minister. “ When the war is over,” the writer continued, “ there will be many men and machines out of a job, and the Glenorchy-Queens-town road will be an ideal place to send them.” The support of the association was ■ asked for.—On the motion of Mr Thorn, seconded by Mr Ferens. it was decided to write to Mr Forbes assuring him of the full support of the association. It was; reported that Mr J. Caldwell, who is at present in Queenstown, would meet the committee and would report on his return.
