CRASH DOWN STEEP HILLSIDE FOUR WOMEN IN HOSPITAL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 9. Four women were admitted to the Auckland Hospital this afternoon as the result of injuries received when the car in which they were travelling left the road on Piha Hill leading down to the beach and crashed 50 feet down a step hillside into a gully. Before leaving the road, the car struck an American serviceman who was standing on the side of the road, and he was- taken to an American hospital. The driver of the car, Mr J. Arthur, of Mount Eden, and two other women passengers escaped serious injury and were not admitted to hospital. The persons in hospital are Mrs Olive Florence Wolfe, aged 45, of Mount Eden, lacerations to scalp, concussion, and injuries to the bacjc and leg; Miss Audrey Leona Beagle, aged 23, of Helensville, concussion, abrasions, and a possible-fracture of the nose; Miss Kathleen Gertrude Shadloclc, aged 24, of Belmont, Wellington, concussion, abrasions, and a possible fracture of the ribs and possible internal injuries; and her sister, Miss Pauline Mildred Shadlock, aged 18, concussion and shock.

The car was proceeding down hill towards the Piha Beach at noon when it struck an American serviceman who was standing on the roadside repairing a punctured tyre on a vehicle. Soon after the serviceman was struck the car appeared to become out of control. The vehicle overturned on its way down the hillside and came to rest on its wheels beside a creek. A party of American servicemen who were travelling behind the car rushed down the hillside and carried the occupants up to the road, where they gave first aid until the arrival of a doctor.
