OBITUARY

MR W. A. PURVIS The death occurred on Sunday last of Mr William Alexander Purvis, manager of the Invercargill branch of Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. Mr Purvis was well known in Invercargill as a member of the Rotary Club and as a pilot officer attached to the Invercargill Squadron of the Air Training Corps. Born at Dunedin in 1900, he was educated at the St. Leonards School and the Otago Boys’ High School. After leaving school he entered the employment of Messrs Bing, Harris, and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, and served there until 1925, when he opened a booksellers and stationery shop of his own at Milton. He remained there for two years, and then purchased a stationery, business at Waimate, where he lived for eight years. He then joined the firm of Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, and was for a short time employed in Christchurch before being appointed manager of the Invercargill branch. An enthusiastic bowler, Mr Purvis was a member of the Georgetown and Waildwi Clubs, and took part in the rinks tournament conducted on Saturday last by the Southland Bowling Centre. He also played hockey, and was a referee of both men’s and women’s matches in Invercargill.' He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the Invercargill Rotary Club. Mr Purvis, who was the youngest son of Mr Henry Purvis and the late Mrs Purvis, of Mosgiel, is survived by his wife and three young children.
