GRAIN AND PRODUCE
WHEAT CROPS HEALTHY There is little to report in the wheat market, although occasional lines are coming to hand. Autumn-sown crops of both oats and wheat have now recovered from the wet spell, and are in much healthier condition. Late-sown spring crops are also coming away well. Fowl wheat supplies are just sufficient for local demands, and the fairly heavy stocks held in store earlier in the season have now disappeared. Prices for good whole fowl wheat remain unchanged. Flour, Bran, etc. Flour- 200’s, £l3 15s Gd; 100’s, £l4 12s 6d; 50’s, £l4 17s 6d; 25’s, £ls 7s 6d. Bran, £5 5s per ton of 20001 b. Pollard, £6 15s per ton of 20001 b. Oatmeal: 2001 b sacks, £25 10s 6d per ton; 251 b loose, £27 0s 6d; 251 b packed in sacks of eight, £27 10s Gd. Oat Stocks Cleared There has been an almost complete clearance of oat stocks, and there are no lines available for shipment to the North Island, although inquiries are still being received from northern centres. The nominal value of A grade Gartons may be quoted at 4s 6d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i., with B grade at 4s 3d per bushel. These prices are equivalent to 3s 6d and 3s 3d per bushel, on trucks, country sidings, sacks extra. Potato Crop The potato crops are looking well, but as the growing period will extend over the next two or three months, it is still much too early to form any idea of the yield. The stocks of seed potatoes in store are not now so heavy, but at the same time there will be a small carryover. The quantity of table potatoes in store is small, and is just sufficient to meet local requirements. Demand for Small Seeds There has been an increased demand from overseas for several lines of small seeds, principally cowgrass, certified perennial ryegrass, and Italian, both certified and uncertified. The demand for Montgomery red clover, both permanent pasture and uncertified, also continues strong. Good quality cocksfoot is in short supply, with an unsatisfied demand. Crested dogstail, Chewings fescue, and white clover remain steady at recent rates Various Commodities Wholesale prices are as follows: Chaff, £6 10s to £7 5s per ton, ex store, according to quality: inferior grade at lower figures.
