On Bougainville Island, in the Northern Solomons, Japanese forces, which probably came overland from Kieta, have made strenuous attacks against the American bridgehead at Empress Augusta Bay. The enemy assault, which was launched near Cape Torokina, was supported by artillery fire.

A concentration of 13 Japanese ships at Halmahera (Molucca Islands) has been attacked by Mitchell medium bombers, and an 8500-ton freightertransport was left stationary and listing after a direct hit and two near misses. General MacArthur’s -communique yesterday reported the sinking of an 8000-ton ship in this area. Nearly 400 tons of high explosives have blasted the. Japanese installations at Gasmata (New Britain) during the past week. In the latest attack Liberators dropped 53 tons of bombs on supply dumps near the mouth of the Bairoke River.
