FARM CONTRACTOR EXONERATED THE NEEDS OF HUMANITY (P.A.) NELSON, Nov. 26. “ I think I must have regard to the present state of emergency,” said Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., to-day, dismissing a charge against Charles Ching, a farm contractor, for working at his calling on Sunday at Richmond. “It seems to me,” the magistrate added. “ that the farming potentiality should’ be exploited to the fullest. I do not think anyone with humane intentions would take exception to the suggestion that it would be desirable for all agricultural land in New Zealand to be tilled from daylight to dark for suffering humanity. The case does not involve the employment of a servant and. according to authority, the law aims at preventing that practice, rather than the preservation of the sanctity of the Sabbath.” The police instituted the proceedings following a complaint by the Richmond town clerk.
