FARM WORKERS
NO “BLANKET” EXEMPTION FROM SERVICE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. No “blanket” exemption of farm workers from military service is intended by the National Service Department. When a man is called for military service his case goes, if necessary, before an appeal board, and each case is judged on its merits. This statement was authoritatively made to-day. It is contrary to a statement made by Mr A. B. Struthers, secretary of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union, at a meeting of that body. No move is made to prevent men from joining the armed forces if they are called yp, other than through the decision of an appeal board. It is pointed out that naturally the appeal boards are aware of the need for retaining skilled workers on farms.
