Mr J. Samson left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr H. Simmonds, who recently retired from the position of station master at Dunedin, left yesterday for Auckland, where he will reside. Word has been received by Mr and Mrs T Adams that their son, Gordon, has been promoted to the rank of pilot officer and is now in England. A motion expressing regret at the death of Dr T. McKibbin. late medical officer of health in Dunedin, and sympathy with his relatives, was passed at the monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night. Mr N. S. Falla, chairman and managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company is expected to arrive shortly in New'Zealand from Britain. Mr Falla is the New Zealand representative at the British Ministry of War Transport. Miss Mabel Howard, M.P., was appointed national secretary of the New Zealand Labourers’ Federation by the annual conference in Christchurch yesterday. She succeeds Mr P. M. Butler, who has retired after 14 years to concentrate his attention on the Wellington. Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland Union, of which he is secretary. The conference expressed regret at> Mr Butler’s resignation. Miss Howard retired from the position of secretary of the Canterbury Labourers’ Union after her election to Parliament at the Christchurch East by-election this year. She was assistant secretary of the union from 1912 until her appointment as secretary in 1934. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr V. Barton and Mr and Mrs W. R. Brinsley for Christchurch, Miss M. Hosiet, Mr C. G. Wilson and Mr W H Wilson for Wellington, Mrs C. J. Carrington and Mr A. C. Ritchie for Palmerston North, and Sergeant W. Weymouth for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr K D Atwood from Auckland, Mr and Mrs G. W. Cole, Mr G. Watson. Mrs W. A. Cockburn, Mr King and Major D. Smith from Wellington, Mr W. K. Thomson and Mr R. Bathurst from Christchurch. Sir Walter Layton, leader of the British Press Delegation now visiting New Zealand, yesterday inspected various industrial concerns in Dunedin, including the factory of Messrs Cadbury Fry Hudson, Ltd., the Roslyn Woollen Mills, Messrs J• and A. P. Scott’s, and the shipbuilding yards at-Port Chalmers.. In the morning he was entertained at a private reception by newspaper proprietors of Otago and Southland and representatives of the journalistic staffs. He also gave an adl dress at the luncheon of the Dunedin Rotary Club. In the evening he attended the performance of the Dunedin Repertory Society in His Majesty’s Theatre. He will leave for the north by air to-day.
