DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS
STATUS IN ACCREDITING SYSTEM The Otago Education Board at -its meeting yesterday received a letter from the Canterbury Education Board stating that it had recently been re- . ported in the newspapers that the Minister of Education (Mr H. G. R. Mason) had announced that certain district high schools would not be on the approved list for the purpose of accrediting for the university entrance examination. The letter added that the Canterbury Board viewed the Minister’s statement with alarm, and it recommended that when schools were being selected for accrediting district high schools should be given full attention. • x A Experienced headmasters of district high schools, the letter added, were as capable as the principals of secondary schools in regard to assessing the merits of pupils, and it was contended that there would be a drift to urban centres if the status of district high schools was affected. It was decided to support the recommendations of the Canterbury Board.
