INVASION OF EUROPE
ALLIES’ MASTER PLAN PREPARATION IN DETAIL LONDON, Nov. 16. “The Allies have a master plan for the invasion of Europe, which would set in motion what may be the greatest military undertaking of all time,” said Lieutenant-general Devers, commander of the United States forces in Britain. He was explaining to 3000 people in South-west England who must leave their homes before December 20 why the land was needed. “The military demands have shifted,” he said. “ and now preparations must be made in detail for attack.
Training areas are being taken over for preparations for a European invasion. No military operations are more dependent upon training than landing on strongly-fortified hostile shores. "To win a bridgehead and expend as few lives as possible in doing so,” he stated, “ the training must be realistic and under actual fire, which requires fairly large areas free of civilians. This training is needed for developing the balance and co-ordina-tion of the master plan. What can be accomplished in these areas could mean the difference between success and disaster for'the Allied plan.”
