CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE At a meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday a resolution was carried placing on record the thanks of the chamber to all who had assisted in making the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, held in Dunedin, an outstanding success. The chairman said it was very pleasing indeed to read the letters of appreciation from delegates and their ladies, who had thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Dunedin, and he, as chairman, was proud of the high standard of the Dunedin conference, which was a credit to the chamber . . .. Copies of the resolutions passed at the conference of South Island chambers and the minutes of the meeting were distributed to executive members for approval before being despatched to other chambers and forwarded to the various quarters as directed by the conference. A report was received of the meeting addressed by Mr. Leigh Hunt on popula l tion, at which representatives of the council of the chamber were present, and it was noted that a committee had been formed to further the interests of the movement being organised throughout New Zealand to endeavour to arrest the alarming decline in population.

It was reported to tiv meeting that an English press delegation was visiting New Zealand, and that only one day would be spent in\the South Island, in Christchurch. It was decided to confirm this itinerary, and, if found to be correct, to communicate with the Internal Affairs Department and make strong representations that the members of the delegation should be given an opportunity of visiting the southern part of New Zealand and thus be able to carry back a true picture of New Zealand as a whole. A report on pillaging and the recent amendments to the Sea Carriage of Goods Act, as presented to the conference of the Associated Chambers by the president, ■was approved and handed to the Vigilance Committee to endeavou*- to reconcile the various opinions expressed by shippers and the Associated Chambers.
