OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board yesterday was attended by Messrs James Wallace (chairman), W. R. Brugh D. C Cameron, W. Jacobsen, J. I. Fraser, N. H, Colquhoun, W. M. Cooper, R Flett, C. E. Richards, and H. A Brough. The Education Department wrote stating that, where air raid shelters could be filled in without cost, the work could be carried out.—The letter was received. Sunday Tennis

The Beaumont Tennis Club made a request to be allowed to play on the school courts on Sunday.—The request was refused, the chairman stating that when the courts were laid down a condition was made that there should be no Sunday play. A request was received from the Omarama Committee that the school building should be enlarged. The committee also asked whether the board could finance the/purchase of a car for the conveyance of children.—The board members for the district were asked to report on the requests. The North-East Valley Committee wrote complaining about the water supply at the school The architect reported that the whole of the vyater service pipeline was so badly corroded that replacement was necessary. The estimated cost was £B9.—The work was agreed to The head teacher at Brighton made an application for a new range. The architect reported that the present range was about 60 years old, and a new one was recommended at a cost of £32.—The recommendation was agreed to Seasonal Work A letter was received from the Education Department stating that the Controller of Man-power had again asked for the co-operation of the department and of the controlling authorities of schools in order to secure the services of as many secondary school pupils as possible for seasonal work during the coming vacation, and in certain localities where there was a seasonal demand during February, March, and April. The age limits were: Boys 15 to 18 years, and girls 16 to 18. The work, it was pointed out, was on a voluntary basis. —It was decided to send a copy of the letter to the headmasters of schools likely to be concerned Appointments and Resignations

Currie (soldier); assistant. Normal (Model I Rural), Harry Hargrave; infant mistress Mornington, Stina B. Renz; infant mistress, George Street, Louisa Aiken. Gene-' ral positions (war appointments): Sole teacher, Momona. Maggie G Hughes; assistant, Anderson’s Bay, Pierce J. L McNamara; assistant, Kensington, Christina M. Cassels; domestic science instructress, Union Street and Mosgiel centres, Dorothy J. G. Anderson. The following resignations were accepted:—Headmaster, Pine Hill, Alfred C. Notman; head teacher, Naseby, Harry Hargrave; sole teacher, Tarara, Mrs Margaret Adams: infant mistress, Anderson’s Bay, Louisa Aiken: assistant, Arthur Street. Bertha J. Woodhouse; assistant, Macandrew Intermediate, Lillian R. Davidson; assistant, Stirling, Frances M. Knowler; secondary assistant, Clutha Valley District High School. George H. Bowie.
