STRIKE AVERTED
DISPUTE AT AUCKLAND GASWORKS (Special) AUCKLAND, Nov. 15. An ultimatum was presented to the Auckland Gas Company towards the end of last week asking for increases in pay for workers. The matter had previously been the subject of negotiation, and the ultimatum, which was to have expired at 8 a.m. to-day, indicated that non-compliance with the men’s demands would result in the cessation of work.
Matters remained in this condition until yesterday morning, /When a further meeting called by the Auckland Gas Workers’ Union was held. At his request, the conciliation commissioner, Mr C. L. Hunter, was' present, and addressed the men. After considerable discussion, it was decided to accept a disputes committee, as provided for under the Strikes and Lock-out Emergency Regulations, with a chairman appointed by the Government.
