HARVESTING WORK
SERVICES OF SOLDIERS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT Particulars of the basis on which territorials helping with the harvesting of crops are to be paid have been received from the director of the fields division of the Department of Agriculture (Mr P. W. Smallfield) by the secretary of the Otago Primary Production Council (Mr E. H. Calder). Whatever type of work is performed by the territorial, whether it is driving an army lorry engaged in harvesting or carting produce or doing manual work in the harvest field, a flat rate of 2s 6d an hour is to be paid by the farmer to the Government. Where the farmer provides rations or quarters he will be credited with an allowance of Is a meal, except morning or afternoon tea, and Is for each night’s lodging. In practice,. The army will maintain the men while they are in camp and will transport them free of charge to and from the harvest fields.
Transport for farm produce will be provided where it is required, and this may include carting hay in the field, and in cases where private cartage contractors are unable to meet the de-, mand cartage to rail, ship, or store. The transport rates are fixed at 3s 6d an. hour for vehicles up to and including three tons carrying capacity and 5s an hour for vehicles over three tons.
For work done on any day of the week, including Sunday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. or up to eight hours during that period the men will receive from the Government a bonus of 6d an hour, in addition to their ordinary army pay and allowances, and a bonus of 2s 6a an hour for work done which exceeds eight hours or for any work done after 5 p.m. Work done which exceeds eight hours or after 5 p.m. is to be voluntary. The department adds that the farmer is not responsible for any payment to the territorial, and the farmer will be charged by the Department of Agriculture or the department concerned for the work done.
