Mr E. J. Smith left yesterday morning for Wellington. A motion of sympathy with Mr G. W. Lane, vice-president of the Dunedin-St. Hilda Sub-zone Committee, in the recent death of his father, was passed at the meeting of the committee yesterday.

Reference to the death of the district medical officer of health. Dr T. McKibbin, was made at the meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last night, and it was decided to convey an expression of sympathy to his wife. Major D. C. Cosgrove, D.A.A.G., Sick and Wounded, Army Headquarters, and Captain R. Borland, officer commanding sick and wounded, Southern Military District, who are visiting area headquarters in the Southern Military District, arrived in Dunedin yesterday. The members of the No. XI Armed Forces Appeal Board—Messrs D. C. Cameron (chairman), W. R. Clarke, and W. N. Satterthwaite—accompanied by the secretary and Crown representative, Mr W. J. Blackler, will return this evening from Oamaru.

Passengers who arrived from the north by the airliner yesterdav were Mr J. T. Dawson, Mr T. Winks, and Mrs Winefield from Auckland, Mr A. McDonald, Mr Parsons, and Mr B. Van Staveren from Wellington, Mr A. Tilbury, Mrs W. Speight, Miss D. Newman, and Miss T. L. McKay from Christchurch.

At the meeting of the Dunedin-St. Kilda Sub-zone Committee yesterday it was decided to send congratulations to Brigadier A. S. Falconer, who has been appointed to relieve Lieutenant-colonel F. Waite as overseas commissioner of the Patriotic Fund Board. The chairman, Mr A. C. Cameron, said he was sure that Brigadier Falconer would fill the post admirably. The chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson) and members of the Otago Harbour Board received a call yesterday from Mr E. V. Bevan, of Wellington, manager for New Zealand of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Ltd., and Captain J. H. Gaskell, of Christchurch, the company’s marine superintendent. The visitors, who were welcomed at an informal function, were very much interested in the board’s plans for the future development of the port, and expressed pleasure at the progressive spirit shown.
