TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

Her admirers hold the opinion that Haughty will go close to winning the Trotting Cup for the second time. Fine A.rt is reported to have cut a foot when racing at Oamaru. The mishap is apparently not deemed serious, and it may not prevent him from starting in the Trotting Cup. - , .. , , The display put up by Shadow Maid in the Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru has brought her into discussions in connection with the Trotting Cup. The Trotting Cup was first run in 1904, the race being won by the trotter Monte Carlo in 4min 44 2-ssec. Only two trotters in Monte Carlo and Reta. Peter have got into the list of winners. According to reports, O. E. Hooper will drive Haughty in the Trotting Cup and D. C. Watts will handle Hardv Oak. M. Holmes will drive Bronze Eagle. F. J. Smith Parshall. and A. Holmes Gold Bar. Definite arrangements have not yet been announced in connection with Springfield Globe, Pacing Power, Fine Art, Dusky Sound, and Peter Smith. The win of Fancy Goods in the Invercargill Trotting Handicap would be very popular as her owner, Mr F. Johnson, ranks as one of the best type in the game. Mr Johnson has been a consistent but not too lucky supporter of lightharness races, and the win did not come out of its turn. , ... At times Bronze Eagle performs in his track work like a champion, and in spite of his failure on race days is a highclass pacer. About two years ago (says the Star-Sun) he travelled a mile and a-half outside the trestles in time which was equivalent to 3min Bsec. On another occasion he did a mile and a-quarter in 2min 36sec without being driven out. On Thursday last he had another such day, when he covered the last half-mile of a two-mi)e trial in lmin. He did two -furlongs of that portion of the trial in 28 3-ssec, and was eased up over the next two furlongs, and then recorded 31 2-ssec. With M. Holmes as his driver he has only to be at the peak of his form on Cup day to create a surprise in the New Zealand Trotting Cup.
