Mr A. B. Callender, the newly-appointed assistant manager of Messrs Brown. Ewing, and Co., Ltd., commenced his duties yesterday. Advice has been received that Privates George Davie and S. Robert, who have been prisoners of war in Italy for l(i months, are now safe.
Dr David Ulley Strang, senior assistant in the Medical Unit, University of Otago Medical School, lias been admitted as a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (M.R.A.C.P.).
Official word iias been received by Mrs E. Bryan, of 53 Maitland street, that her son, Private Jack Bryan, who was a prisoner of war in Italy, lias been reported safe.
Colonel S. M. Satterthwaitc, Now Zealand Staff Corps, who, since returning from the Middle East, has been commandant of the New Zealand Tactical School at Wanganui, arrived in Dunedin last night. The Deputy Mavor of Green Island (Cr J A. Callery) and the town clerk (Mr R. J. K. Gillies), will leave to-day to represent the council at the conference which is to be held in Christchurch to consider the advancement of the South Island. Passengers who arrived from the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr.E. H. Whiting, Sergeant M. D. Lawson, Miss E. H. Wilson and Mrs C. P. Raines from Auckland, Miss M. Butler, Mr R. A. Bell. Mrs K. Pound and the Rev. J. Pound from Wellington.
Advice been received of the success of the following Dunedin candidates who sat for the recent police examinations:—Sergeant M. Oonway, completed examination for the rank of sub-inspector; Sergeant C. L. Spencer and Constable W. J. Robertson, partial passes for seniorsergeant; Detective R. J. A. Berry and Constable E. 11. 'Clark, partial passes for sergeant; Constable C. G. Evans, qualified in literary section of sub-inspector’s examination.
The members of the Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee—Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), H. H. Gillard, and S. D. Macpherson—accompanied by the secretary. Mr J. C. Bates, will attend the industrial Man-power Conference in Wellington this week. Mr Gillard will leave this morning, and the other members of the committee will leave to-morrow morning They will return at the end of the week. The acting district man-power officer Mr J. H. Flowers, will also leave this morning to attend the conference. Mr E. A. Selman, who has been district man-power officer for the last 18 months, and will leave this morning for Wellington, where he has been appointed district man-power officer, was met by the staff of the National Service Department last evening The acting man-power officer, Mr J. H. Flowers, making a presentation to Mr Selman, spoke of his sterling qualities and of the esteem in which he was heid by the staff. On behalf of the Industrial Man-power Appeal Committee, Mr M. W. Grantham (chairman) extended best wishes to Mr Selman.
