SUMMER SPORTS
TENNIS AND BOWLING COMMENCED The summer sports’ season in Oamaru was commenced on Saturday afternoon with the opening of the Awarnoa lawn tennis courts and the Phcenix and Awamoa bowling greens. The Wesley courts were opened a fortnight ago, but Saturday provided the first really fine weather suitable for summer sport's for a number of week-ends. The rank grass at Milner Park has retarded’ the preparation of wickets, and it is probable that a few weeks will elapse before cricket is commenced. At Phoenix there were about 80 bowlers. The green was declared open by Mr E. Moyle (president). Mrs Moyle rolled up the jack, and the first bowl was played by Mrs Reeves (president of the women’s club). Ail the sister clubs were represented, and greetings were conveyed to the club by Cr G. E. Glen on behalf of the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness), who left Oamaru on Saturday for the north, and by Mr D. H. Thomson .(president of the North Otago Centre and member of the Dominion Bowling Council). At Awarnoa there was also a good attendance of members 'and sister clubs, Mr T. Boulton (president) declared the green open and Mrs Boulton played the first bowl. The Meadowbank green will be opened next Saturday. Six courts at Awarnoa were kept in full use by the 50 to 60 players who attended on Saturday afternoon, the courts being declared open by Mr J. H. Main (president). Greetings were conveyed by Mr A, R. Tait (president of the North Otago Association and of the Meadowbank Club). The excellent condition of the courts was due to the gratuitous work of two Borough Council employees (Messrs Perniskie and Mills), who gave up their Saturday afternoons for the past few weeks ■to asphalt and to top-dress the courts. The Meadowbank courts will be opened next Saturday. /
