RACING NEWS
By Sentinel First In, who holds two engagements at Gore, has not yet raced up to the promise of her two-year-old form. Steward was hopelessly left In his race at the Dunedin spring meeting, and hence did not show his best form. The Beau Pere gelding Atreus may be hard to beat in the Presidents Handicap at Gore if he runs up to his best form. At the Gore spring meeting held last season Lady Don 10.9 won well. She has 51b more this year, and meets Gnohill on lib worse terms than when they met In the same race last year. Last Effort bore an improved appearance when he raced at the Dunedin spring meeting. He has added strength to a big frame, and that should result in improved form. , , , . Girl Friend has displayed a good deal of pace, and, with an extra year on to her age mav carry it over more ground this season. 'She is'engaged in the Novice Handican at Gore. Salmi has won so well in her last two starts that further success should be in store for her. Salmi is bred on lines that should help her to win over more ground than she has covered up to date. Riding Home, who is engaged at Gore, won three times last season, finishing up with a win in the Southern Hack Handicap, run at the Dunedin winter meeting. She won with 8.12 over seven furlongs in lmin 28 4-ssec, and may be in favour at Gore. Gnohill 8.6 ran third to Marquee 8.4 and Arabian Night 7.10 in the Clarendon Handicap, run at the Dunedin spring meeting of last season. A head sepaiated Arabian Night and Gnohlil, who won well at Wingatui and comes in on 51b worse terms at Gore. Royal Brief, who appears to be improving, is a half-brother to Ark Royal, a winner of the Dunedin Guineas. Ark Royal had his racing career wrecked by getting seriously injured by a kick on the shoulder when at the post for the Wellington Cup, in which he was strongly fancied bv his trainer. On his form in the Clarendon Handicap, Alpine could not be fancied for the Highweight Handicap at Gore, as he failed to get near the money at any part of the business end of the race. Arabian Night should beat him again if the form was correct, but under different conditions at Gore it would not occasion surprise if Alpine reversed the form. Macedoine is being kept busy on the track in spite of reports that she still retains evidence of a cold. Apparently the trouble is not regarded as serious, as a horse usually gets a let-up in such circumstances. Last season Macedoine won five times, ran second twice, and third twice in 12 starts. At her best Macedoine, who is bracketed with Sascha, would find strong support for the President’s Handicap. Last season Macedoine won the Wyndham Cup and ran second to Royal Lancer in the Invercargill Cup, in which Bashful Lady was unplaced. Minority has 101 b more to carry in the President’s Handicap at Gore than he won under in the Ranfurly Handicap. He meets Platform on 61b worse terms, and the track conditions may be in favour of the Night Raid gelding. Last season Platform won four times. His first win came in the Easter Handicap at Gore, the next in the Champion Hack Handicap run at Riverton, the third in the Provincial HandicaD at Wingatui. and the fourth in the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham. Platform will probably start favourite at Gore.
Tara King, the winner of the Wellington Guineas, had one unplaced performance as a two-year-old, and this season in his third start finished second to Te Awe Awe over seven furlongs at Masterlon. Tara King is a bay colt got by Beau Pere from Zarene, by Chief Ruler —Crown Lady, by Crown Imperial II Molly, by Mystification—Reformation, by Renown, and goes back to the Pulchra taproot. Tara King is a half-brother to Low'enberg, a winner of the New Zealand Derby in 1935. According to some opinions, Lowenberg would have won the New Zealand Cup in 1939 but for breaking a leg through putting a foot in a hole when travelling well about a furlong from home. At the time of the mishap Lowenberg was running handy to Yours Truly and Capricious, who finished first and second. Amongst those fancied for their engagements at the Motukarara meeting may be the following:—High weight HandicapGay Thread, Anchorage, Abdicate; Trial Plate—St. Nattar, Grecian Glow, Sally Lux; North Canterbury Handicap—Foxhaven. Foxleap, Palfrey; Hororata Hack Handicap—Saldowa, In Chancery, Burberry; Will Memorial Handicap—John o’ London, Rawhair.ai, Night Pal; Amberley Hack Handicap—High Play, Inscription, Gay Fort; View Hill Trot—Terry O'Shea, Night Porter, Navy Queen; Rangiora Trot —Bonny Volo, Night Porter, Sunny Glen.
