NEW COMMANDER

MEDITERRANEAN FLEET , ADMIRAL SIR JOHN CUNNINGHAM RUGBY, Oct. 22. Admiral Sir John Cunningham has been appointed Commander in Chief, Mediterranean, in succession to Sir Andrew Cunningham, First Sea Lord. He is a cousin of Sir Andrew. Sir John is 58 years old. He has y been known for years as one of the finest navigators in the navy, and as a man of the highest efficiency. He was the first navigator of the battle cruiser Renown in 1916, being commander a year later. He was promoted navigator of the flagship Lion in 1918. Then, appointed to H.M.S. Hood for her maiden commission, he was the first navigator of that great ship—the world’s biggest warship. He was at sea throughout the last war, and participated in the Dardanelles campaign. He commanded H.M.S. Adventure (1928-29); was Director of Plans, Admiralty (1936-38); and commanded the battleship Resolution in 1933. He was appointed A.D.C. to the King in 1935, became Assistant Chief of Naval Staff, a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty (1936-38), and Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Air) from 1937 to 1938. On the outbreak of war he was Vice-admiral commanding the First Cruiser Squadron. He became Fourth S-ea Lord and Chief of Sup. plies and Transport in December 1940
