[REPORTS OF COMMITTEES ! The following are some of the main i points of interest in the reports of i committees to be presented at the meetj ing of the City Council on Tuesday I night:— ; Bridge at Waipori.

Roberts, has submitted the neces- ! sary plhns and specifications for the ! construction of a concrete and steel bridge across Lake Mahincrangi to pro- • vide the necessary access consequent I on the raising of the dam to the 110- ; feet level, and authority has been ; granted to invite tenders for this work, i The Electricity Committee recommends , that the bridge be named the “ Edgar E. Stark Bridge,” in appreciation of ' the services rendered to the department by the late Mr Stark, who was i engineer from 1907 to 1914. I Libraries Conference.

The Library Committee recommends that Cr E. J. Smith, chairman of the Library Committee, and the acting librarian be appointed to represent the Council at the annual conference of the New Zealand Libraries’ Association to be held in Wanganui from February 15 to 18.

Playing Areas. The following applications for the use of playing areas on the council s reserves for the summer season have been granted: —Otago Cricket Association, eight wickets; Otago Cricket League, five wickets; Otago Women’s Cricket Association, three wickets. The usual charges will be made for the use .of these wickets, subject to a special war-time reduction of 25 per cent.

Appointment of Inspector. Authority has been granted to. call applications for the position of sanitary inspector, to fill the vacancy in the department which will be created by the retirement of Inspector Thomson on November 30. Milk Supply

The report of the chief sanitary inspector discloses that 155 samples of milk were taken during the month, and of these 16 failed to comply with the required standard. Three prosecutions were instituted by the Health Department and fines totalling £3O 4s 3d were inflicted. Street Improvements.

The city engineer has been authorised to improve the cross fall of the footway across the intersection of Moray place and View street by raising the level of the path and channel, at an estimated cost of £45. This work will improve the footway and also assist traffic turning at the intersection. He has also been authorised to prime with tar the carriageways on the Wakari bus route, from Helensburgh road, via Shetland street, Greenhill avenue, Crichton street. Mayfield avenue and Lynn street to Balmacewen road, and Chapman street, from Lynn street to Balmacewen road, at an estimated cost of £275. During the summer it is riecessary to water these routes on account of the dust nuisance, at a cost of approximately £144, and as the sealing should last at least 18 months the additional expenditure is warranted. At present there are no funds available for the tar-sealing of these streets, which is estimated to cost about £IOOO.

Loan Authorities. Advice has been received from the Local Government Loans Board that the council’s application to raise the following loans have been approved:— The Mahinerangi Dam Construction Loan (1943) of £156,600, for the purpose of completing the construction of the dam in the Waipori River, together with incidental works, including the cost of roads and bridges. The term of the loan has been fixed at 30 years, with interest not exceeding £3 5s per cent, per annum, and a sinking fund at not less than £2 per cent, per annum. Also the Conversion Loan Third Repayment Loan (1943) of £BI,IOO for the purpose of redeeming on April 1. 1944, certain debentures issued pursuant to the Dunedin City Loans Conversion Order. 1934, maturing on April 1, 1947. The term of the loan is three years and the rate of interest £3 5s per cent, per annum. No sinking fund is required.
