WELCOME CHANGE IN WEATHER MILLING WHEAT FINISHED The welcome change in the weather will now enable farmers to proceed with the preparation of the ground for wheat, and those who have the ground ready will be able to go ahead with sowing. The success of the wheat sown at this time of the year will depend entirely upon the weather experienced during the growing period and also in the early autumn when the grain is harvested. Transactions in milling wheat are moie or less finished for the year, and only odd lines will find their way on to the market between now and next harvest. Flour, Bran. etc. Flour: 200's, £l3 15s fid; 100's. £l4 12s (id; 50's, £l4 17s 6d: 25’s, £ls 7s 6d. Bran, £5 5s per ton of 20001 b. Pollard, £6 15s per ton of 20001 b. Oatmeal: 2001 b sacks, £25 10s 6d per ton: 251 b loose, £27 0s fid; 251 b packed in sacks of eight. £27 10s 6d. Inquiry for Oats There is a good inquiry from tire North Island for all varieties of oats, but merchants arc not in a position to respond as stocks are barely sufficient for local use. In fact, it has been necessary to draw on Southland for seed lines during the past few Weeks. - Stocks of chaff are Just sufficient for local requirements, and this market iqUiet Supply of Seed Potatoes There are still ample stocks of seed potatoes available, and if the weather remains fine for the next few weeks there will probably be a considerable Increase in the area planted. Stocks of table potatoes are not large, but on the other hand business is of a hand-to-mouth nature. Any potatoes at present in store lequne picking over. Seeds Market Steady Most of (lie interest in the small seeds market during the week has been m Montgomery red clover, the uncertified variety receiving most attention from operatois. but P.P. has also been dealt in to a certain extent. This is. the result of inquiries from Great Britain. Ame i also evinced some interest in white clot er. but the volume of business has not been large, and there appear to be definite limits to the price that can be paid. Cocksfoot and crested dogstail remain firm at recent rates. The quantity of hig grade ryegrass, particularly ceititled se-j. now in merchants’ hands Is very sma . and there do not appear to be any lines held by growers still to be dealt with. The market for brown top and Chewing! fescue remains unaltered. Various Commodities Wholesale prices are as follows: Chaff. £6 10s to £7 5s per ton, ex store, according to quality; inferior grade at 5s Sd to 65 per bushel, ex store, according to quality and quantity Butter: Bulk, Is per lb. Bacon: Is 3d per lb. Hams, Is 2sd per lb; boneless. Is 4d Prices of Eggs The Government-fixed wholesale prices for eggs are as follows: —Heavy, Is 3d dozen; standard, Is 6d; medium, Is 4.d, pullets’, Is 3d. The retail prices arc Is 10Jd, Is BJd, Is 6Jd, Is sd.
