RACING NEWS By Sentinel. Compeer should be improved by his race at Timaru as he looked a bit round in condition. Knight Commander has more than an outside chance in his races at Trentham. Desdrt Strife has been a bit slow away in some of her races, an improvement would make her hard to beat at Trentham. Scottish Dale continues to gallop well on the track but does not race up to her best form with the colours up. The Ringmaster filly Subdued has created a very favourable impression and is expected to shape well in the Wellesley Stskcs * Balfron, with two wins and a second this season, will probably start favourite for the Wellington Guineas. They have some smart performers in the North Island but they will need to be smart to head off Lord Advocate and Compeer in the Shorts Handicap. 4 A big field is engaged in the Novice Handicap, to be run at Gore, but without any guide to form only a guess could locate the favourite.
Gnohill, Steward, Kohara, Arabian Night, Boncaut, Jack o’ Lantern, First In, Last Effort and Sascha hold more than one engagement at Gore. Last Effort could not act in the going at Wingatui but should shape well in his selected race at Gore, where he holds three engagements. John o T London should be improved by his race at Wingatui and should shape well at Motukarara.
Colonel Rouge has been coming along nicely since being replaced in training after a compulsory stop in his work through being galloped on when racing at Riccarton. The Kincardine colt Glenfalloch has been showing an improvement, and his two wins this season will bring him strong support for the Wellington Handicap. Depth Charge, a three-year-old gelding by Wild Chase—Back Thrust, by Rapier, who is engaged at Gore, cost 400gns at the national sales in August. It may be rather soon to expect him to reach his best. Prudentia is a bit doubtful at the barrier, and requires handling in a race. She ran off the co.urse and finished along the outside rail when fourth in the August Handicap. She is engaged in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, in which there are some smart gallopers. Beau Vaals will dispute favouritism, if he is not-actually sent out favourite, for the Shorts Handicap. As a three-year-old last season he won twice and also ran a third and two fourths in eight starts. He meets Poutatau on 101 b better terms than when he ran a close fourth to him in the Railway Handicap at the Wellington autumn meeting. Beau Vaals is reported to be shaping well in his work. Red Prize, Who has been galloping well at Invercargill, ran once last season as a three-year-old. He is a four-year-old gelding by Paper Money from Red Treasure, by Balboa—Red Pal, by Pallas. Red Treasure is a sister to Scarlet Lady, the dam of Amorlad. Red Prize is engaged in the High-weight Handicap at Gore, and is bracketed with Red Hope, a four-year-old brother to Amorlad.
A correspondent writes strongly disagreeing with the opinion that Silver Paper was the best horse sired by Paper Money, and quotes Silver Streak, Inflation, and Autopay. Apparently he cannot distinguish between a class horse and a handicapper. Silver Paper beat Pink Coat in the Challenge Stakes in lmin 24 4-ssec, when giving 201 b, Pink Coat on the previous day had won the Champagne Stakes with 8.10 in lmin 13 2-ssec. Silver Paper won the Ormond Gold Cup with 9.4, beating Reremoana 9.1, one,of the best milers of his day. Inflation, Autopay, or Silver Streak at no time equalled that form of Silver Paper, of whom the best was not seen.
TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel R. B. Berry's stable will be represented at Greymouth by Silhouette, My Lady Luck, Trusty Scott, and Air Speed. W. J. Doyle has a good team in work at keeston.. It includes Lament, Within, Bomber, Sea Max, and Rerewaka, a brother to Bomber. In a work-out over a mile and a-half at New Brighton, put up early in the week, Fine Art is reported to have beaten Peter Smith and Dusky Sound. Although it has been reported that Springfield Globe is a doubtful starter in the Trotting Cup, he still remains in the field after the declaration of the second forfeits. In summing up the possibilities in connection with the New Zealand Trotting Cup, it should not be overlooked that the back-markers have nine on the front row and six or seven on the second row to get past.
Horsepower and Kenworthy dropped out of the Trotting Cup. The Australian pacer Prudent King is the only other one missing from the original strength of. the field. Another payment is due on October 28.
At the Auckland and Greymouth meetings (win-and-plaee betting) the starting times are as follows:—Auckland: 11.40, 12.30, 1.15, 2 p.m., 2.45, 3.30, 4.15, 5 p.m. Greymouth; 12, 12.45, 1.25, 2.10, 2.55, 3.40, 4.25, 5.15.
In the event of the Trial Handicap at Oamaru being contested by more than 17 horses, the race will be run in divisions and the stake will be increased by £SO. The divisions are as follows: — First division: Amazah, Convincer, Fast Friend, Furlough, Imperial Force, MacBain, Nonnie Grattan, Pencarrow, Safety First. Special Effort, Sylvia Direct. Second division: Bonny Axworth, Cumnock, Frances Logan, Gold Rosette, Ingle Belmer, Nola Wrack, Pre-eminence, Princess Maritza, Sea Fortune, Surety, Traverse.
