NATURAL BASE
OFFENSIVE AGAINST JAPAN (N.Z.P.A. Special Aust. Correspondent) SYDNEY, Oct. 22. Australia was the natural industrial base in the southern hemisphere from which a full-scale offensive could be directed against Japan, said' members of the British press delegation now visiting the Commonwealth. They will arrive in New Zealand about November 15. "Australia, with its highly developed and efficient facilities for repair of ships, aircraft, and other munitions of war has the base workshops which offensive operations on the modern scale demand,” said Sir Walter Layton, a noted English economist and chairman of the London News Chronicle and Star. " Not only has Australia created a complete and complicated industrial structure, all in 25 short years, but she possesses the tremendous advantage of having space in which to expand her growing industries after the war.”
The visitors expressed surprise that women were not more generally employed in Australian industry. They were, however, impressed by the physique and stamina of the Australian workmen. The extent to which Austialia had turned to the manufacture of items for which she would normally depend on Britain was amazing.”
