ELLICE GROUP
MARINES OCCUPY ISLAND PEARL HARBOUR, (Rec. 1.40 a.m.) Sept. 29. United States Marines recently occupied Manumea, the most northerly of the Ellice Islands, without opposition.
The construction of an airfield at Manumea will bring the major Japanese Gilbert Islands air base of Tarawa, 450 miles to the north, within striking distance.
