ADVANCE ON KIEV
HUGE RUSSIAN ARMIES DESPERATE ENEMY DEFENCE (Rec. 1.50 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 22. The Russians flung in fresh. reserves and are continuing the offensive in all sectors, especially towards Kiev, says the Vichy radio. General Rokossovsky, in his advance on Kiev, is using the Desna Valley. _ The Paris radio said that huge Russian armies, supported by tanks and planes, are attacking German positionsalong both sides of the Roslavl-Smol-ensk 1 road. German covering forces in the southern sector are -engaging the Russians, who are trying to prevent the retreat.
The newspaper Red Star, describing the capture of Chernigov, says the Germans called up dive-bombers. They fiercely contested the ground, and, launched counter-attack after counterattack. The Russians by-passed the town to the west and* threatened to cut the only escape railway, but not even this threat could induce the Germans to evacuate the town. Russian cavalry almost completed a ring around the town, but after three days of bitter fighting the town had to be ; carried by storm. Even now - in-all directions the Germans are conr'tinuirig fierce resistance.''
