PROFIT SHARING
Sir.—People who know anything of the history of the idea of profit-sharing in industry will not think anything complimentary of the National Party for making it. a plank. The scheme consists in creating an illusion that the worker has a personal stake in the business concerned (and hence no reason to maintain his own organisation, his union, to protect his living conditions) by the simple device of calling part of his wage by another name. In a depression when ‘ profits disappear the unprotected worker gets an automatic cut. The capitalist politician, with all the science of modern advertising to call on, can make all sorts of wares sound tempting. But “the more they change the more they remain the same thing ’ the same old attack on the patiently built-up organisations of the workers and middle classes, the organisations to maintain economic standards and promote humane legislation.—l am, etc., 0.
