MINED BY GERMANS
HALIFAX HARBOUR ENTRANCE QUICKLY SWEPT CLEAR OTTAWA, Sept. 21. The Germans tried but - failed to block Halifax Harbour with mines last June. The navy announcement disclosing this says that 60 mines were laid in the ship channel, but were promptly discovered and a clear path was' swept within 24 hours, enabling a convoy to depart. The whole mine*. field was cleared in three' days. No lives were lost, and only one small freighter was sunk. The mines, which were, believed to have been laid by a submarine, were of the moored magnetic type and more powerful than any previously seen by veteran minesweepers here. The mines were moored to the ocean floor, but were designed to explode magnetically. ... ,• 11. * The. enemy made one fatal sup that gave the game away. He left one mine on the surface, where it was spotted, , and the minesweeper fleet immediately moved in. The enemy fed mined the approaches to Halifax Harbour in an arc intended to close the port to all shipping.
