NATIONAL PARTY’S CAMPAIGN
OPENING ADDRESS ON AUGUST 31 A statement that the general election campaign of the National Party would be officially opened on August 31, when he would give a policy address in Christchurch, was made by the leader of the party, Mr S. G. Holland, at a meeting of supporters in Christchurch North. The speech would be broadcast throughout New Zealand, he said. The campaign programme was outlined by Mr Holland, who also discussed the different influences on the election and the prospects of the party. He expressed pleasure at the type of National Party candidates so far selected in more than 70 electorates. Many of the candidates were young men, and a number had given service with the armed forces in the present war.
THE KAIAPOI SEAT
Private R. Pearson has been chosen to contest the Kaiapoi seat in the interests of the Democratic Labour Party. Aged 40, he was born in Auckland, and in civilian life was a farm machinery mechanic. He was an active member of the Labour Party for 20 years and for a period was vice-president of the Westport branch.
