RUGBY FOOTBALL

UNIVERSITY, TEAMS, BEATEN DUNEDIN NOW LEADING The Otago Rugby Football Union's senior competition was continued on Saturday. The weather was fine and the grounds were in good order. Kaikorai defeated University Medical in the main match at Carisbrook, and Air Force sprang a surprise by beating University Combined Faculties. The defeat of the two University teams left Dunedin, which had a comfortable win against Union, with a lead of two points. The following were the results:— Kaikorai 7, University Medical 6. Dunedin 22, Union 3. Air Force 33, University C.F. 15. Training College 15, Zingari-Richmond 3. Flag points: Dunedin 20, University Medical 18, University Combined Faculties 18, Kaikorai 17, Air Force 13, Training College 8, Zingari-Richmond 7, Union 3. NARROW WIN FOR KAIKORAI Kaikorai met University Medical at Carisbrook, and after a match which was marred by many mistakes and numerous infringements by both sides, the former won by seven points to six. Possession, of the 'ball from the set scrummages and loose rucks favoured Kaikorai, and although the University forwards improved in the second spell they lacked dash and vigour in the loose play. I. Murray was in the thick of the play for Kaikorai, and J. Hamilton and D. Morton were conspicuous in the loose. The backs, however, were not capable of, turning their opportunities to account. W. Manning did good saving work, and G. Irvine and D. Renwick both showed up in individual efforts. The University forwards played with little cohesion, but T. Thomas and B. Howie were prominent in the loose play. In spite of limited opportunities, the University inside backs—P. Ongley, R. Langley, and J. M. Tweed —staged several bright combined movements, but mistakes in handling In the threequarter line prevented most of them from being pressed home. There was no score at half time. A. Newlands kicked a penalty goal for Kaikorai in the second spell and G. Irvine potted a goal. M Smeeton and Tweed scored tries for University. In the closing stages a Kaikorai player was ordered off the field. Mr H. Palenskl was the referee. SURPRISE BY AIR FORCE Showing all-round superiority. Air Force defeated the University Combined Faculties team by 33 points to 15 at the Air Force ground. Both sides endeavoured to open up the play, and a bright and interesting match resulted. A. Bills, E. Hickson, and M. Walton were the pick of the Air Force backs in attack, and V Gotlieb, I. Turner, Price, and J. Watt were a quartet of good forwards. J. Peeti was the best of the University backs, and R. Mara played a useful game In the pack R. Masters, the Air Force full-back, had a field day. He converted four tries, kickgd a penalty goal and potted a goal. Tries for Air Force were scored by Walton (2), Thurston, McFarlane, Turner, and Watt. The scorers for University were Coxon (2), Peeti, Mara, and D. Wood. Mr L. Millar was the referee. DUNEDIN DEFEATS UNION There was little spectacular play In the match between Dunedin and-Union at the Caledonian Ground, which the Dark Blues won by 22 points to 3. One outstanding incident, however, was another field goal by D. Trevathan, who played at full-back for Dunedin. After Union had forced the ball T; Freeman kicked out. Trevathan fielded the ball well out, and added one more field goal to his world record in this scoring department of Rugby. The packs were well matched, but the blue backs saw most of the ball from the scrums, and they had more thrust than the opposing vanguard. Nevertheless, not one try' was scored by a back during the afternoon, but more than one back would have been across had it not been for the deadly tackling of the Union full-back, Freeman. In the first spell L. Ward, for Dunedin, kicked a penalty goal, and was awarded a questionable field goal, and Freeman kicked a penalty goal for Union. In the second spell Ward kicked another penalty goal. H. McManus scored an unconverted try, Trevathan potted a goal, and just before time K. Thompson was awarded a try from bustling play on the Maroons' line, Ward converting. Mr J. Westland was the referee.

WIN FOR TRAINING COLLEGE Playing an open and enterprising game, Training College had a fairly easy win over Zingari-Richmond on the University Oval. The College backs were a much better combination than their opponents. The College forwards also worked well in the scrums, and gave the backs plenty of ball. Zingari’s defensive tactics were fairly successful, but the team as a whole was not noticeably good on attack. Training College opened the scoring when Muller, on the wing, crossed for a try wide out, and a little later Zingari scored its only try, Peat dashing over from a scramble near College’s line. Thereafter College maintained the upper hand, and a series of fast back movements resulted in further tries being scored by Walker (two), Rendall, and Muller. The final score was Training College 15 points, Zingari-Richmond 3 points. Mr D. A. Kilgour was the referee.
