NORTH PACIFIC WARFARE

NEW PHASE OPENED; (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 13. “The bombing of the Kuriles represents a new phase in the North Pacific warfare,” says the Washington correspondent of the New York Times. “Whereas in the spring of 1942 the Japanese were moving in the Aleutians and attempting to' knock out Dutch Harbour, the Americans have now recaptured Attu, established advance bases on other islands, and are concentrating air attacks,on KisKa, the only remaining Japanese base. “ The strategy of bombing the Kuriles at this stage of the war is not completely clear,” the correspondent says, “ since it does not seem likely that any major blow against these islands is being planned for the immediate future. It is, however, • regarded as an* excellent way of punishing the enemy and testing his nerves by keeping him on guard.”
