TUNNEL ROAD SCHEME

“ The council should demand the production of the reports submitted by the general manager of railways on the subject of the proposed new tunnel road from Lyttelton to Christchurch. We have reason to believe that he has hindered the future of Canterbury,'’ declared Mr V. E. Hamilton, speaking for the Chamber of Commerce in support of the tunnel road scheme at a meeting of • the Christchurch City Council. “As Lyttelton is served now, the railways have a stranglehold on freight traffic, and charge a very high tariff,” continued Mr Hamilton. “This is a special tariff which applies to no other part of New Zealand except, possibly, to the line between Port Chalmers and Dunedin.”
