Boiling syrup (41b of sugar to five breakfast cups of water) should then be poured over the peel, and the jars sealed and sterilised by placing them in boiiing water for about half an hour. The jars must be airtight. The practice is similar to that employed when preserving fruit. “ Old-timer.’’—(l) The railway line between Milton and Lawrence was opened in two sections. The first section, that between Clarksville and Waitahuna (14 miles 78 chains), was opened on January 22, 1877, and the second section, between Waitahuna and Lawrence (7 miles 3 chains), on April 2, 1877. (2) The highest price reached on the share market for the Kawarau Company’s shares in connection with the mining scheme, which included the construction of the Kawarau Falls dam, was approximately 265.
