He will probably come to hand early. The New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase was established in Soutn Canterbury and was first run at Studholme in 1875. Saturday’s race was tne sixty-ninth of the series. The Dunedin-owned gelding Town Hall has grown into a handsome three-year-old, and if looks won races nothing would be beyond him. Gay Falcon, who is now trained by H. J. Benge, has shown a noticeable improvement during the last week cr two. His race at Timaru obviously worked a big improvement in the Night Raid gelding. Rex Beale rode a good race on AngloFrench in the Grand National Steeplechase. He covered as little ground as possible between the fences, and had his mount safely placed inside the wings at each jump. During the race AngloFrench was kept handv to the front, but did not dispute leadership when anything took charge and improved the pace. His rider exercised patience and good judgment. Mr W. E. Hazlett put ud something in the nature of a record when he saddled uo the first and second horses in the Grand National Steeplechase. It was a Donular win, and the bracketed horses and their riders came in for rounds of applause as they came into the bird cage. Mr J. S. Hazlett, the part owner of the horses, is away on active service, and so is a younger brother.
