SUNKEN NORMANDIE
RAISING OF VESSEL STARTED (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 7. The raising of the Normandie was started to-day, and is progressing according to schedule. A navy spokesman said that 356 portholes had been closed, 5447 square feet of deck openings patched, and 6000 tons of deoris, 5000 tons of superstructure, 80001 b of glass, and 10,000 cubic yards of mud had been removed. He added that at present the water was being pumped out to right the ship slowly over a period of many days. The Normandie will be lifted from the angle of 79deg, at which she has lain for 18 months, to an angle of 45deg, after which she will be moved to the centre of the slip for reconditioning. The, total salvage cost will be 3,750,000d01. The’reconditioning is expected to take nine mQnths. and will cost another .20,000,000d01. The great engines are still sferviceable. The navy believes that the tremendous salvage operations are worth while inasmuch as the Normandie will be restored at less than half her original cost of 59,000,000d0L
