ONTARIO ELECTIONS
GOVERNMENT DEFEATED (Rec. 11.40 p.m.) TORONTO, Aug. 6. Six Cabinet Ministers v/ere defeated in the Ontario provincial elections. The Premier, Mr H. C. Nixon, retained his seat, but the Liberal Party suffered a severe setback. The Canadian Press Association estimated that the' new Parliament would consist of 38 Pro-gressive-Conservatives, 34 Co-operative Commonwealth Federation members, 14 Liberals, 2 Labour members, and 1 Independent. One seat is still doubtful. 1 , The Associated Press of America pointed out that the Liberal Party was not only in power in Ontario, but also controlled the National Government under Mr W. L. Mackenzie King, and it stated that it was common talk that Mr King forced the Ontario election to ascertain the Liberal strength and, if it made a satisfactory showing, MiKing would have called a ' general election.
