OBITUARY

MR J. M. THOMSON

Mr James Morrison Thomson, whose death occurred at Owaka on July 4, was one of the best-known business men in the Clutha district. Born at Saddle Hill 70 years ago. he went as a boy with his parents to Owaka Valley (called Upper Owake at that time), his father being one of the first settlers to establish a home there. He was educated at the local school and was one of the first scholars to attend it. When school days were over he and his brothers worked on their father’s farm till he acquired a property of his own. This he farmed very successfully for 10 years. Being a very good judge of stock and a capable buyer and seller, he accepted an invitation to join Messrs Donald Reid and Co. as a stock and station agent. Disposing of his farm, he removed to Owaka, where he remained for many years. Resigning his position there, he joined the Otago Farmers’ Insurance Company in' a capacity which he held till his death. Being a, shrewd business man and possessing a genial disposition, he made many friends wherever he went. He was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, and was superintendent of the Sunday school and a member of the choir for many years. Among Mr Thomson’s other local activities was membership of the Domain Board, the Rest House Committee, and the A. and P. Society.. He leaves a widow and one daughter, his only son having died five years ago.

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 16. The death has occurred at Rotorua of Mr John Ulrich Collins, formerly a master at King’s College for over 20 years. Mr Collins was a member of a well-known Marlborough family and was educated at Nelson College. He had an outstanding athletic record, playing representative football for Wellington and representing Canterbury as a fast bowler and wicket-keeper. He also won the Lawn Tennis Doubles Championship of the Dominion and other championships, and was a skilful fly fisherman.
