FIGURES ANALYSED
SOUTHLAND IN FRONT A leading Dunedin accountant who has made an exhaustive analysis of the figures relating to the subscriptions for the recent Liberty Loan said yesterday that the honour of contributing the largest amount per head of population in New Zealand went to the province of Southland. His figures deal with the populations in the various provinces, the amounts allotted per head of population, and the amounts subscribed. The manner in which the amounts allotted per head of population was arrived at is puzzling, as Nelson, the banner winner, was assessed at £lO 5s per head. West Coast £26 16s, Canterbury £2O 11s 3d, Otago £lB 14s 6d, Southland £l7 17s, Wellington £l7 12s, Auckland £l7 9s 6d, Hawke’s Bay £ls 4s, Taranaki £l4, and Marlborough £l3 9s. The actual subscriptions per head of population work out, according to the Dunedin accountant, as follows: Southland £2O 10s, Otago £2O 6s, West Coast £2O 6s, Wellington £lB 13s 6d, Canterbury £l7 4s 6d, Auckland £l6 8s 4d, Marlborough £l6, Hawke’s Bay £l4 10s 9d, Taranaki £l3 7s 6d, and Nelson £l2 6s. According to these figures, Nelson has achieved a fame which is not deserved.
