SIXTY YEARS OF SERVICE
The claims upon the generous purse
of the public incidental to war are many, and probably tend, in the language of the day, to receive priority over other appeals. But there are certain organisations whose work, in war-time as in peace, must depend to a large extent upon regular and liberal public giving, and which at all times well merit the financial support they receive. Of such is the Salvation Army, for which an appeal will be made in the city streets to-day as part of the “Self-denial Week.” This is the sixtieth year of public service of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, and it should not require to be emphasised that its activities cover to-day a very large field of social service.. In some respects the Social Security policy of the Government may have lessened the financial strain upon the Salvation Army, without affecting the administrative responsibility of the organisation, but the maintenance of its work in certain of its sociological aspects must continue to be dependent entirely upon public subscription. Over a very considerable number of years it has been our pleasure to commend to the people of Otago the deserving cause for which today’s street collection is being made, and we are confident that, in spite of the many other calls for assistance, this one will not be neglected.
