SWEEPING FORWARD
CANADIANS’ SUCCESS (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, July 14. The Canadian press representative, Mr Ross Munro, in a cable message from Ispica, Sicily, on Monday, says: “Sweeping the Italians before them, and with a bag of over 1000 prisoners, including a divisional general and his staff the Canadians penetrated some miles inland from the Pachino Peninsula beach-head, and are still speeding on. “Town after town is surrendering. The lack of determined resistance is surprising, even to our divisional staff. On Monday morning, Modica, 10 miles north-west of Ispica, surrendered to General*. Dhavel, of the Canadian infantry, and the staff of the 206th Coastal Division were taken prisoners. Hundreds of additional prisoners are pouring in. With the capture of Ispica, Pozzalo, and Rosolini, the Canadians have captured the principal towns in south-eastern Sicily. The infantry are advancing at an incredible speed, and it is practically impossible to keep in touch with their movements. Our casualties, are at a minimum.” The American, Seventh Army re-, pulsed the crack German Hermann Goering Division, supported by large Italian forces, in the vicinity of Gela on Sunday. The Germans lost 10 Mark IV tanks, which are a relatively old type.
