SPEED AND TYRE WEAR

The extent to which drivers of motor vehicles can effect economies in petrol. * and rubber by maintaining reasonable road speeds, without any appreciable loss of time, is shown by the following authenticated data. If a 25 h.p. car is driven at 30 miles per hour, the difference in time per mile is only 30 seconds more than’if a speed of 40 miles per hour were maintained, but the savings in petrol and tyre wear are approximately 91 per cent, and 27 per cent, respectively. With a 12 h.p. car the savings amount to 10J per cent, of petrol and 27 per cent, less tyre wear. At a speed of 20 miles per hour a 25 h.p. car takes 90 seconds more time per mile than when driven at 40 miles per hour, but there is 62 per cent, less tyre wear and a saving of 9£ per cent, petrol. At the same driving speeds with a 12 h.p. car. 62 per cent, less rubber is wasted and 21 per cent, less petrol. While time is valuable, it is. to-day nowhere nearly as valuable as rubber and petrol; hence the importance of a “go steady” habit of driving.
