RED CROSS SOCIETY
ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY VALUE OF V.A.D. ORGANISATION ... X (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 43.; The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, opening the annual meeting of the ’Dominion Council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society to-day, praised the activities of the society and emphasised that although much had been accomplished there was still a tremendous amount of work ahead of the society, particularly in the postwar period. He urged that there should be no let-up in their endea- . vours. Sir Cyril Newall said he was gratified that there had been a solution concerning the wearing of the Red Cross embled by V.A.D.’s serving overseas. Making particular reference to the V.A.D. organisation his Excellency said that a most creditable performance had been put up and obviously a tremendous amount of work had been done. He expressed the hope that people outside who had not yet taken . up the work would give it consideration, so that the ranks of the nursing V.A.D.’s would be., increased. The Junior-Red Cross ■ was another very important branch of activity and one very close to his heart. The training of the young in that way made a great contribution to the country in fitting them to take part in the reconstruction after the war. His Excellency alluded to the work which the Red Cross Society and kindred organisations would be called upon to undertake in the period im-. mediately following the end of the war in helping to relieve the sufferings and privations of the overrun countries of Europe, and expressed the conviction that the society would play a worthy • part in that great activity.
