RAIDERS OVER ENGLAND

BOMB STRIKES A KINEMA LONDON. July 9. ‘For the first time in daylight since June 27 London had a brief alert this afternoon. Workers leaving offices-and factories in one area in the outskirts threw themselves to the ground or sheltered in shop doorways as one raider swooped low and machine-gunned the streets and dropped bombs, damaging some houses. The local anti-aircraft guns opened up as the raider flew to the north.

Enemy planes were over one district of the home counties, where the antiaircraft batteries sent up a big barrage, and the planes were heard diving evasively. They were last heard heading for the coast.

Planes over another home counties town disappeared to the south-east from the London area, following by bursting shells. The raiders, after an interval, either returned or. a fresh wave-swept in. A terrific barrage was again opened up on the outskirts of the city. The raiders also dropped high explosives on a town in south-east England and a southeastern coastal resort. It has been ascertained that there were 184 persons in a kinema in one of these areas. The majority of the raid casualties in this town occurred in the kinema. but a few were killed or injured in business premises. Identification of the kinema victims is still proceeding. It is believed that the last body has been recovered from the wreckage.
