ABSENCE FROM WORK

WOMEN CHIEF OFFENDERS (P,A.) WELLINGTON, May 29. Forty persons, almost exclusively women, w,ho were either known to be defaulters or suspected to be such under the Industrial Man-power Emergency Regulations, were rounded up in two days in a recent “driye” carried out by the Wellington manpower authorities in conjunction with the special branch of the police authorised to question people frequenting hotels and places of amusement during working hours. The ages of the persons questioned ranged from 16 to 35 years. The tightening up of the administration has l?ad particular application to cases of absenteeism, which still show little sign of decreasing. During the 17 months the regulations have been in force in Wellington 1800 cases of absenteeism have been reported. During April 42 fines were imposed by the Wellington manpower authorities in cases of absenteeism, of which 170 were reported; and for the present month 130 fines have been imposed out of 300 reported cases, the majority covering the aftermath of the Easter holidays.
