EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY
The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) yesterday sent telegrams to Mrs Coates and to the Prime Minister expressing the regret Avith which the City Council and the citizens as a whole received the news of Mr Coates’s death. At the annual meeting of the Southern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society at Gore yesterday, the chairman (Mr J. A. Edwardes) made reference to the great loss the Dominion had suffered by the death of Mr Coates. “ Whatever their political opinions,” Mr Edwardes said, “ all present will ddmit that he gave outstanding public service to this Dominion.” A resolution of sympathy Avith the relatives was carried. At a meeting of delegates to the Qtago Labour Representation Committee last night a resolution was passed conveying to the relatives of Mr Coates the committee’s , deepest sympathy. The resolution added that the passing of Mr Coates would Be a decided loss to the Dominion’s Avar effort and that hte courage as a soldier Avould remain a lasting memory.
