Dr C. H. Hughes-Johnson, of Wanganui, has been appointed assistant medicai superintendent of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Mr J. L. Johnston will leave this morning for Wellington, where he will represent the Otago and Southland Bacon Curers’ Association in matters connected with the industry.

Mr H. D. Cooper, manager of the Napier branch of Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., has been appointed superintendent of'the company for the Dominion, in succession to the late Mr T. A. Moodie.

Passengers who left for the north by the airliner on Saturday were Mr J. Dickson, Mr D. H. Blackie, Mr J. Whitty, Mr J. McLennan and Mr H. Dunn for Christchurch, Mr G. Stratmore, Mr H. McGill-Brown and Mr A. J. Pascoe for Wellington, Miss J. Doube and Miss J. McLachlan for Auckland. A cable message from the special London correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association states that L. M. Campbell (Dunedin) has been promoted temporary lieutenant and S. R. Watts and S. M. Ferguson (Dunedin) have been commissioned temporary acting lieutenants. They are members of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve. At the annual elections held by the New Zealand Tramways Union in Wellington, Mr F. Hackett (Wellington) was elected president, and Mr W. B. Richards (Dunedin) vice-president. Mr T. A. Hansen (Wellington) was appointed national secretary. Mr Richards and Mr R. Braithwaite, the Dunedin delegates, returned on Saturday night. While in Wellington they also attended the Labour Party Conference.

A< motion congratulating Mrs J. Hargest on the safe arrival of her husband. Brigadier Hargest, in Switzerland from a prison camp in Italy was carried at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council on Friday. Mr W. D. Sheldon (chairman) said that all New Zealand was thrilled by the news of the escape of Brigadier Hargest and Brigadier Miles./ Mrs Hargest, who is a member of the council, said that in response to cabled inquiries news had been received that Brigadier Miles and her husband were both in good health and were being well cared for.
