HISTORY IN MAPS

Soviet Russia In Maps. Edited by George Goodall, M.A., 4s. Map of the Atlantic Charter. Designed by MacDonald Gill, 7s 6d (George Philip and Son). Interest in Russia, as in any country, must be poorly informed if it is not related to geography in its widest sense. In Soviet Russia in Maps, Messrs Philip have compiled a volume that should widen knowledge, of the Soviet. Its purpose is to illustrate the present-day geography, economic resources, and development of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, with a backward ■dance at the origins and historical irowth of Russia. This is important, since the geographical factors governing the foreign policy of the former Russian Empire are equally valid for Soviet foreign policy. The scheme includes seven pairs of facing maps for each aspect—one of the whole Union and one of European Russia on a larger scale. The letterpress is concise and informative. Also from this well-known firm of cartographers comes the Time and Tide Map of the Atlantic Charter. This is, to judge from the reduced reproduction, a handsome affair in full colour, and a yard square. It illustrates pictorially the resources of all the world’s countries, and contains across the top on a scroll the terms of the Charter. A. L. F.
